Nature-Inspired Dress – College Final Project:

Textile Exploration & Garment Construction

This was the first garment I created for my final college project, inspired by the organic shapes, textures, and earthy tones found in nature. Through fabric choice, silhouette, and handcrafted detail, I aimed to reflect the quiet beauty and complexity of the natural world.

A key focus of this piece was learning how fit affects both structure and comfort—how fabric interacts with the body and shapes the overall form. I selected velvet as the base fabric to enhance the garment’s richness and to create a striking backdrop for hand embroidery.

The embroidery was a personal milestone: my first time attempting the technique. While it was a challenge, it sparked a lasting passion for handcraft and textile embellishment, and remains my favourite element of the piece.

This project was a turning point in shaping my identity as a designer.

It deepened my love for storytelling through craftsmanship, and encouraged me to see garments as tactile narratives, built stitch by stitch.
